چکیده

The anaesthetic potency of a substance is closely related to its lipophilicty. This has been interpreted as evidence for a lipid mechanism of action for anaesthesia. However, with the success of the conductance based Hodgkin-Huxley model for the nerve impulse, the scientific community shifted to considering protein ion-channels the cellular target for anaesthetics. Today, the lipid hypothesis has returned with a mechanism of action based on a whole new view of the nerve impulse as a theromodynamic event rather than an electric one. The new model is known as the soliton model, because it describes the nerve impulse as a solitary density wave. In this project we find that the soliton model can explain the cutoff of anaesthetic potency in n-alkanes. Then we consider the medical implications that the soliton might have for the neurological desease, epilepsy.

Changes in Electrical Conductivity of a Synthetic Basalt during Melting

The electrical conductivity of a synthetic basalt has been determined at atmospheric pressure in air at temperatures between 700 ø and 1600øC. The conductivity increases by about 2 orders of magnitude in the melting interval between 1130 ø and 1263øC. It is suggested that partial fusion in the seismic low-velocity zone of the upper mantle may account for the correlation of increased electrical ...

Vertical Melting of a Stack of Membranes

A stack of tensionless membranes with nonlinear curvature energy and vertical harmonic interaction is studied. At low temperatures, the system forms a lamellar phase. At a critical temperature, the stack disorders vertically in a melting-like transition. PACS. 82.65.Dp Thermodynamics of surfaces and interfaces – 68.35.Rh Phase transitions and critical phenomena

Volatile anaesthetic effects on calcium conductance of planar lipid bilayers formed with synthetic lipids or extracted lipids from sarcoplasmic reticulum.

Volatile anaesthetics are known to increase leakage of calcium from the light fraction of skeletal sarcoplasmic reticulum (L-SR) which has no calcium release channels. To explore the role of the lipid environment, we have examined the effect of volatile anaesthetics on calcium conductance (gCa) of lipid membranes. Planar lipid bilayers were formed with a mixture of synthetic phospholipids and c...

Nanofiltration of synthetic and industrial dye baths: Influence of temperature on rejection and membrane fouling

Nanofiltration (NF) has become a widely accepted process not only for producing drinking water but also for recovering wastewater in industrial processes or removing pollutants from industrial wastewater effluent. In the textile industry, the treatment of various dye baths with NF at room temperature have already been studied and was found feasible at lab-scale and pilot scale. The aim of this ...

Line tensions, correlation lengths, and critical exponents in lipid membranes near critical points.

Membranes containing a wide variety of ternary mixtures of high chain-melting temperature lipids, low chain-melting temperature lipids, and cholesterol undergo lateral phase separation into coexisting liquid phases at a miscibility transition. When membranes are prepared from a ternary lipid mixture at a critical composition, they pass through a miscibility critical point at the transition temp...
